Nikolaj Kunsthal

Nikolaj Kunsthal presents especially Danish, but also international contemporary art in unique historical surroundings in the middle of Copenhagen.

Nikolaj Kunsthal is located in the former St. Nikolaj Church, Copenhagen’s third oldest church with one of the tallest towers in the city – a unique setting for contemporary art Europe-wide. The beautiful architecture is part of an interaction with changing exhibitions, most recently by Ditte Ejlerskov, Nikoline Liv Andersen, David Lynch, HuskMitNavn, Leonard Cohen and others. Nikolaj Kunsthal focuses on Copenhagen’s contemporary art scene and is preoccupied with art meetings across genres, media and formats. The art centre also regularly presents concerts, performances, guided tours, dinners, talks, etc.

Special exhibitions:

Maria Wæhrens: The Answer - 27.08.2026 - 10.01.2027

In The Answer, painting moves into space as Maria Wæhrens creates a sensory total experience in the Upper Gallery. Monumental canvases float like walls of fabric, while raw brick walls are transformed with traditional egg tempera. Inspired by a dream, the exhibition unfolds as an expressive and immersive spatial composition.

Christian Skjødt Hasselstrøm: Meridians - 27.08.2026 - 10.01.2027

In Meridians, the Lower Gallery is transformed into a cosmic listening station. Using advanced detector technology, Christian Skjødt Hasselstrøm makes cosmic rays physically present in a monumental sound installation where sound, visual art and science meet. Please note that the exhibition contains strong changing lights and powerful deep bass.

Upcoming exhibition: Platform * Emma Rosenzweig x Olivia Turner: HOLE - 09.10.2026 - 15.11.2026

In HOLE, three women retreat to a remote summer house after the end of their relationships, moving between grief, fear and transformation. Surrounded by forests, marshes and open landscapes, the boundaries between their inner lives and the world around them slowly begin to dissolve. Shot on black-and-white 16mm film, the work uses grainy images to blur the lines between skin, landscape and shadow. In Platform, the film is presented as an immersive installation with tactile velvet-covered walls that extend the atmosphere of the film into the room. The exhibition explores loss, the male gaze, mutual care and the collective strength that can emerge between women in crisis.
